UDALL FOUNDATION AWARDS 2015 NATIVE AMERICAN CONGRESSIONAL INTERNSHIPS

The Udall Foundation is pleased to announce that 12 students from 11 tribes and 10 universities have been selected as 2015 Native American Congressional Interns. They were selected by an independent review committee on the basis of academic achievement and a demonstrated commitment to careers in tribal public policy.
The Udall Interns will complete an intensive, 10-week internship in the summer of 2015. Special enrichment activities will provide opportunities to meet with key decision makers. From 1996 through 2015, 233 American Indian and Alaska Native students from 113 tribes will have participated in the program.
- Tyler Barron, Bay Mills Indian Community, interning in the office of Representative Raúl Grijalva
- Mitchell Bear Don’t Walk, Paiute-Shoshone Indians of the Lone Pine Community, interning in the office of Senator Tom Udall
- Abaki Beck, Blackfeet Tribe of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation of Montana, interning in the office of Representative Betty McCollum
- Melanie Ben, Navajo Nation, interning with the House Committee on Natural Resources
- Stacie Crawford, Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, interning in the office of Senator Heidi Heitkamp
- Elisabeth Guard, Swinomish Indians of the Swinomish Reservation, interning with the Department of the Interior, Office of the Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Indian Affairs
- Alexandra Johnson, Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, interning in the office of Representative Martha McSally
- Michon Johnson, Cheesh-Na Tribe, interning in the office of Senator John McCain
- Christine Jordan, Blackfeet Tribe of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation of Montana, interning with the Department of Justice, Office of Tribal Justice
- Jeremiah Thompson, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, interning with the Department of Education, White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education
- Meghan Topkok, Native Village of Ambler, interning with the Department of the Interior, Office of the Solicitor, Division of Indian Affairs
- Heather Torres, Pueblo of San Ildefonso, interning with the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs (pending)

The Native American Congressional Internship Program provides American Indian and Alaska Native students with the opportunity to gain practical experience with the federal legislative process in order to understand first-hand the government-to-government relationship between Tribes and the federal government. The internship is funded by the Native Nations Institute for Leadership, Management, and Policy.
