Jim Huffman was born and raised in Montana where, at an early age, he acquired lifelong interests in the outdoors, mountaineering, river rafting, gardening, and insect collecting. After attending public schools in Bozeman, he graduated from Montana State University. Jim went on to earn a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a law degree from the University of Chicago.
Jim joined the Lewis & Clark Law School faculty in 1973 and has been associated with Lewis & Clark ever since. He was a founder of the school’s top-ranked environmental/natural resources law program in the 1970s and served as dean of the school from 1993 to 2006. He taught courses in natural resources law, water law, constitutional law, legal history, and torts and has published hundreds of law review articles, essays, and commentaries on a wide range of topics. Jim is also the author of two books published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2013: Private Property and State Power and Private Property and the Constitution.
During the course of his academic career, Jim has been a visiting professor at the University of Oregon, Auckland University in New Zealand, Athens University in Greece, and Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala. He has served as a fellow at the Humane Studies Institute, the Heritage Foundation and the Hoover Institution. He also serves on the boards of the Property and Environment Research Center (PERC), the Foundation for Research on Economics and the Environment and the Western Resources Legal Center and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Environment and Property Rights Practice Group of the Federalist Society. In 2012, Jim was appointed by Governor John Kitzhaber to the Oregon Citizens Initiative Review Commission.
Jim is Dean Emeritus of Lewis & Clark Law School having retired from teaching in 2012. In 2010, Jim was the Republican nominee for United States Senator from Oregon. He resides with his family in Portland, Oregon, and has a mountain home outside of Bozeman, Montana.
