Madelyn Smith studies natural resource ecology and management with a minor in painting and drawing at Louisiana State University. Madelyn is committed to sharing the stories of coastal residents threatened by Louisiana's coastal land loss. In April 2017, she self-published a photography book, Louisiana Gone, featuring interviews of residents living in communities threatened by land loss. Madelyn is a research intern with Coastal Voices, a website and podcast series exploring the relationships between people, land, and water in Louisiana, for which she films and produces a series of documentary shorts. In March 2018, she delivered a TED talk at TEDxLSU about using storytelling to address Louisiana’s coastal land loss.
