UDALL FOUNDATION AWARDS 2017 NATIVE AMERICAN CONGRESSIONAL INTERNSHIPS

The Udall Foundation is pleased to announce that 10 students from 8 tribes and 9 universities have been selected as 2017 Native American Congressional Interns. They were selected by an independent review committee on the basis of academic achievement and a demonstrated commitment to careers in Tribal public policy.
The Udall Interns will complete an intensive, 9-week internship in the summer of 2017 in Washington, D.C. Special enrichment activities will provide opportunities to meet with key decision makers. From 1996 through 2017, 255 Native American and Alaska Native students from 117 Tribes will have participated in the program.
- Christina Bell Andrews, Tohono O’odham Nation of Arizona, interning in the office of Representative Raúl Grijalva
- Karlen Yallup, Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon, interning in the office of Senator John McCain
- Katherine McCleary, Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana, interning in the office of Senator Jon Tester
- Trevor Farland, Navajo Nation, interning in the office of Senator Tom Udall
- Nancy Deere-Turney, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, interning with the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, majority
- Joshua Bertalotto, Tunica-Biloxi Indian Tribe of Louisiana, interning with the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, minority
- Aaron Fournier, Chickasaw Nation, interning with the Department of the Interior, Office of the Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Indian Affairs
- DesiRae Deschine, Navajo Nation, interning with the Department of the Interior, Office of the Solicitor, Division of Indian Affairs
- Ashleigh Fixico, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, interning with the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women
- Portia Skenandore-Wheelock, Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin, interning with the Department of Justice, Office of Tribal Justice

The Native American Congressional Internship Program provides Native American and Alaska Native students with the opportunity to gain practical experience with the Federal legislative process in order to understand firsthand the government-to-government relationship between Tribes and the Federal Government. The Udall Internship is funded by the Native Nations Institute for Leadership, Management, and Policy.
